We arrived late to the Central Park
Bed and Breakfast and that was really too bad because the grounds
surrounding this wonderful inn are indeed special, there are so many beautiful,
towering, majestic homes surrounding the Central Park Bed and Breakfast that pulling into this
neighborhood just past dusk was like driving into a dream world. The Central
Park Bed and Breakfast is no dream though; there are five guest rooms and
innkeepers Nancy and Kevin Hopper are truly old southern charm and hospitality
down to the very last detail. We were late in arriving but that was no bother
for the Hoppers as they wanted only to be sure that we had everything that we
needed for the evening. They offered us wine, chocolates, peanuts, and Makers
Mark as we ascended the staircase to the second floor; these facts were not
lost on this reviewer.
Our room was a generous sized single room with a
queen sized bed. The frame for this bed had oak pillars and a protective
canopy. While we were tired my wife and I were able to afford ourselves of most
of this room's wonderful amenities. There was a big screen television (maybe
40" or so) which was housed in what appeared to be a chest at the end of
the bed. There was a comfortable sitting area with springy cushions on their
couch and wonderful two tiered coffee table where we could set down our
drinking glasses, other personal items, remote control, and ultimately our
tired feet. The bathroom was also quite well appointed with a quizzical square
toilet seat and a refreshing, strong, and warm shower.
Sleep was really the thing about the Central Park
Bed and Breakfast as it was truly blessed. The bed in the room we were in was
sort of situated at the crest of a bay window sans the center window. Many of
these older houses are built in this style and the two windows on either side
of our slumber made for the perfect rising for me (early) as well as a suitable
time of rising for my dear wife (at all). While there was a frightening event
when we first arrived (our wonderful innkeepers keep a very vocal cockatoo in
the kitchen which was one flight below us. While I was poking around the house
Innkeeper Nancy called me into the kitchen and I was loudly greeted by this
bird) the fact is that this bird knew the rules of the house and didn't bother
us a peep all night long. By this reasoning and the wonderful lighting tricks
played by our windows, sleep at the Central Park Bed and Breakfast was bliss.
Many may wonder about the name "Central Park
Bed and Breakfast." - Is this inn in New York City? Actually, no, but it
is located near Central Park. Central Park in Louisville is located at 1340 S 45h St and has a
wonderful amphitheatre which hosts free Shakespeare in the summer. As well
Central Park has been a meeting space for neighborhood groups; other amenities
at the park include a playground, tennis courts, spray pool, picnic tables, and
so much more. Built on 17 acres directly across the street from the inn, the
Central Park of Old Louisville is a grand statement which makes the inn a great
feat as well. The Central Park Bed and Breakfast is on the National Historic
Register and was crafted in 1884. The Central Park Kentucky neighborhood
features America's largest collection of Victorian homes; the neighborhood is
truly beautiful.
Some more fun facts about the Central Park Bed
and Breakfast is that there are 18 rooms total in the three story residence.
The seven guestrooms are each individually appointed in period furnishings.
There are 11 fireplaces in the Central Park Bed and Breakfast; there is a
fireplace in each guestroom. Also each guestroom at Central Park Bed and
Breakfast has a work desk, TV/VCR (our room had a DVD player), cable, high
speed online access, private telephones and personal bathrooms.
The next morning we awoke to some of the
wonderful smells one flight below. Fresh coffee and juice started our meal and
we were presented with this wonderful fruit, granola, and yogurt dish. Sliced
bananas, fresh strawberries, blueberries and pineapple, were just a few of the
mix and this dish, coupled with their fresh from the oven muffins would have
sufficed, but then Innkeeper Nancy brought out the big guns; her crepes. These
were a true joy; raspberries and blackberries inside of a rolled lemon crepe
with the innkeepers own special cream, rolled tight and then drizzled with
raspberry syrup; these crepes were truly epic. Then Innkeeper Kevin rolls out
with a fresh slice of ham and I was done! My wife tried to keep up but she
couldn't handle the whole; there was another woman eating with us who wasn't as
lucky; while none of us was in a hurry, she appeared to still be struggling
with the delicious nature of the food coupled with the sad reality that there
was no way she could conquer the whole thing. She was still at the table when
we'd left.
The morning sun peeked over the leaf tops as we
left the Central Park Bed and Breakfast. In terms of the overall experience at
Central Park, it was truly restful and organic; even though we were late in
arrival and barely stayed long enough for our car to cool down. This inn is a
true gem of Kentucky; much like the Aunt Rebecc's that we stayed at in Baltimore.
So the next time you are heading to the Louisville area, you should skip the
Marriot and head on over to Central Park Bed and Breakfast. With its splendid
appointments, generous innkeepers, and wonderful array of amenities, the
Central Park Bed and Breakfast is the place any informed Louisville visitor
will stay.
