Arrowhead Manor Bed & Breakfast, Morrison, CO

Originally published May 15, 2009

One of the most impressive things about a place like Arrowhead Manor is the dichotomy in its even being there. Arrowhead Manor is just off one of the major mountain highways in Colorado; US Highway 285 and depending on where you are approaching this place from, you may have to drive past it, get off the highway, come around to the other side and head in the other direction. This was the trip for my wife and I after having labored all day on the lengthy road from Texas; we ended up our thirteen hour trip on the wrong side of the road; gazing across with some forlorn. Fortunately for me, my dear wife is the directions expert and expertly guided me to the endgame; the Arrowhead Manor itself.

For folks first visiting the Arrowhead Manor, they may think that the inns relative proximity to the constant clamor of the highway traffic would be too much to bear. However enter inside the Arrowhead Manor and the guest will be transported to a fully inclusive reality; a ski-lodge atmosphere with antique appointments like high backed dining room chairs, romantic railings, and unforgettable views from the exterior porch makes Arrowhead Manor one place you cannot miss when you are traveling into the greater Denver area. Everything is a little bit further apart in the great outdoors of the Wild West, but Arrowhead Manor is a great destination even for the business traveler to Denver; with the city lying a short 12 miles away! Relaxation is the name of the game at the Arrowhead Manor with jazzy standards being broadcast on low frequencies throughout the common areas all the time; step inside your room though and the rancor of everything; the exterior, the highway, the house noises; all falls away into a luxurious calm and serenity that can't be beat.

When my wife and I descended on the Arrowhead Manor it was in their first floor Honeymoon Suite. This suite had a high, imposing doorway which swung open to shag carpet, a king sized bed, an elaborate entertainment system, a delightful bathroom area with separate shower, water closet, matching sinks, and a whirlpool tub. As well at the Arrowhead Manor, our room as well as the folks just above us had an epic porch area attached to our rooms. There was common access for everyone in the bed and breakfast to these sweeping vistas. Unfortunately for the busy traveler, what too many people do when they "vacation" is busy themselves with other affairs which makes appreciating a place like Arrowhead Manor something of an afterthought. However if you are coming into the greater Denver metro area and you happen to be staying at the Arrowhead Manor, drop all else and just honor the inn; you will not regret it.

For my wife and I, after an epic day of driving, the Arrowhead Manor offered welcome respite from the toils of the road. We actually went to the local King Soopers and got a salad and some other quick food to heat up then we scurried back to the bed and breakfast; seeing the inherent value in being able to relax at our destination. My wife actually bundled up and braved the early May Rocky Mountain evening to go outside and do her Pilates DVD; when I tried to replicate that a short time later by serving breakfast on our awesome outdoor table, we both decided after a beat that it was far too cold to enjoy our meal. Still the views were breathtaking; our experience at the Arrowhead Manor Bed and Breakfast was certainly a memorable one.

Arrowhead Manor is a relative newcomer to the field with it being just around four years young. Owners James and Marguerite Herb broke ground on this impressive site in 2004 and even this year did some remodeling. When we were at King Soopers, one of the cashiers picked us out as out of town folk; when we revealed where we were staying not only was she familiar with the space but the gentleman in back of us on line had stayed at Arrowhead Manor in the past and had agreed with our initial assessment that it was the best game in town!

Some of the amenities at Arrowhead Manor include things like Magic Finger type Bed Massagers in the beds, the amazing bath areas with spa or whirlpool tubs, individual control of heating and air conditioning in your room, an in room mini fridge, DirecTV with 200 channels, key-coded locks and entry, semi-private balcony decks, individual coffee makers, spa services available, and their famous, full, all-you-can-eat breakfasts.

Speaking of breakfast, this thing the next day was one for the record books. We are talking about a full spread with fruit, pound cakes, juice, coffee, and that was just what was out when we got there. Then you have your order taken; the chef can prepare your choice of egg dish, omelet, biscuits and gravy, or the chef's special of the day. The special on this day was the chef's own recipe French toast, dipped in corn flakes! While that was enticing, both my wife and I were excited to see the chef's omelet skills; we both ordered a spinach, tomato, and cheddar cheese variety which came with home fries. This omelet was really good; a little heavy on the spinach but you can never get too many of your greens! The omelet was not at all saturated with butter or oil flavors and was a real winner. Complementing this were some very good home fries; crispy on the top and soft and fresh on the bottom.

We had to leave the Arrowhead Manor Bed and Breakfast in a flash for our next adventure. However as we walked away I turned my back to get one last look at the impromptu café which had been created with the emergence of all of our bed and breakfast neighbors that morning. the scene was quite stunning; a sea of green trees and swooping mountains which cascaded into empty gorges; the full open sky; and this one little bed and breakfast which had become this morning a picture of camaraderie and neighborly good vibes in the rock of the Colorado mountains.
