When you first walk into the B&W Courtyards
Bed & Breakfast (2425 Chartres St - (504) 945-9418) in New Orleans, you
have entered into a clever slice of history. Situated under the guise of one
address, this is actually a building which houses three different 19th century,
smaller units which all fall beneath the custody of B&W Courtyards and the
co-owners, Rob and Kevin.
As you navigate past the entryway you are darting
through a maze of low ceiling passageways which may give off the air of being
some covert secret ops mission gone awry. The fact is that you are in one of
the up and coming gems of an up and coming neighborhood in a badly wounded
city.
New Orleans is still the same as she ever was, but
the pain is there and the people are still reeling. Some have gone away for
good; many are afraid to return. Unequivocally, I'll say it for the mayor; New
Orleans is open for business and is ready to host you again or for the first
time.
About New Orleans or life in general, many people
have false assumptions. Of these preconceptions, Rob, the vocal owner of the
B&W Courtyards will have no trouble correcting you about. Kevin, the
quieter, though no less charming of the two is actually a skilled masseuse;
depending on your temperament, you may need both of these men for their
attributes. While Rob is full of plenty of opinions and stories, there was an
important lesson that I learned while recently staying at the B&W Courtyards
In New Orleans and in the French Quarter, there
are drunken people who are over your head and they are trying to kill you. Not
literally; but with the throwing of beads, there is a danger for the unaware. I
had always been under the assumption that these beads were just given out to
foxy ladies who liked to show some skin or kiss one of their own gender; this
assumption was wrong. There was an association of lawyers (who had rather
lamely "tagged" their beads with their calling card) and were out throwing
beads randomly. I, not paying attention, not having any inclination to raise my
shirt, was hit squarely in the eye by these dastardly lawyers. So be vigilant,
if anything.
Back to the B&W Courtyards, I must compliment
the gents on their fine room which they recently hosted my wife and me in.
While the room was not huge, it was comfortable and did come appointed with all
the amenities including cleanliness, cable TV, ceiling fan, vanity, WiFi,
comfortable bed, ironing board, private bath, classical security system-
But really, who is ever in New Orleans to marvel
at their room? The B&W Courtyard has three things going for it: Location,
Location, Location! It is on Chartres Street which leads you in a beeline into
the action of Bourbon Street after hours and The French Market during the day.
It is safe enough to walk in at night but there are always cabs buzzing about.
In addition there is a 24 hour monitored parking facility one block up if you
are feeling woozy about leaving your stuff.
Rob is a very nice man who will help navigate you
to anything you could possibly want. He will provide you with a map and with
all the instructions you need; Kevin is the wry anecdote and is always moving
about. To his further credit, Kevin makes a great apple turnover thingy for
breakfast which was pleasing. His precision in cutting up your fruit in the
morning is impeccable as well. Glass of juice, a cup of coffee, and you're on
your way.
So whether you are interested in sitting and
chatting the day away with these two gents or if you have got early business in
the city, B&W Courtyards Bed & Breakfast is able to cater to your every
whim.
