Savannah Inn Bed & Breakfast, Lewes, DE

Originally published April 23, 2009

There is something a little heartbreaking about the Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast; it's sort of like coming to the realization that you'll only have a unique experience once; the memory of a first kiss, your first time driving alone, the experience of holding your first born; and being always sad about never being able to replicate the experience. The Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast is run by a mother/daughter combo and was a glimmering bright hope on our trip due to a staggering number of extreme variables which all lined up in unison harmony and sung throughout our stay.

The Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast is not a sign of the apocalypse; however its inclusion on your trip across Delaware is vital. Lewes Delaware isn't really so much "on-the-way" to anywhere, but it's more of a destination. Still Lewes Delaware and The Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast are worth your time and destination dollar. While out and about, my wife and I spoke with some folks from town that knew of it; of its owner, of its existence; but had never experienced the inn firsthand for themselves.

The Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast is located in Lewes, Delaware (the first town in the first state) and this fact was part of our bliss in the experience of the Savannah Inn. Lewes has a population of right around 3,000 so everybody pretty well knows everybody else's business; be it firsthand fact or heresy. While visiting the Second Street restaurant Agave, my wife and I happened upon A.J. who not only knew of the Savannah Inn's co-owner and chief design brain, Innkeeper Gina, but they had also grown up together and gone through the school experience together. Gina is quite young and the fact that she's able to run this Bed and Breakfast with the hands-off help of her mom is quite remarkable. Our hours spent at Agave ended with us chatting up two folks from neighboring Rehoboth Beach as well as drowning our cares in the skilled margaritas of bartender A.J. This shared experience was part of the celebration at the Savannah Inn.

But not all of our bliss at the Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast had to do with alcohol and friendly folks and history of Lewes, Delaware.

No this inn was all about combing the classic with the modern. The Savannah Inn is located in a newly renovated, turn of the century brick Victorian home. Innkeeper Gina has done a standup job in her design and running of the show at Savannah Inn. It's not even the hit-you-over-the-head things that make Savannah Inn a great place to stay; it's the smaller things which are decidedly more subtle which took this reviewer and his wife away.

When you first enter the Savannah Inn on the main level of the house there is a wraparound enclosed porch, where folks can sit and chat and while the day away; my wife and I were even served breakfast on the porch the next morning. Lewes Delaware isn't popping up on CSI anytime soon; however there is even less reason to fear for your safety at the Savannah Inn because to even get in to the enclosed porch area requires a key, code, or admittance by Innkeeper Gina.

Continuing in to the main level of the Savannah Inn is a cool, stylized common area. There is tea, there is coffee, there is luxurious seating, there is a growing collection of DVD's, and there are a variety of games. There is even a Monopoly table that's built in to one of the high-back chair tables in the game room itself. There are also a multitude of curved edges in the Savannah Inn; Jerry Seinfeld would be very much in his element at a place like the Savannah Inn.

Up the stairs, my wife and I stayed in The Wishing Tree Suite. When you walk into the carpeted suite, I was immediately presented with a space that was bigger than apartments I've lived in for whole years of my life! Oh to have those years back to be a permanent border at the Savannah Inn! (The Savannah Inn is coming up on its first birthday; gone are those years, but helpful to know for future horrible living arrangements!) The space is bathed in soothing earth tones and includes both a king sized bed, suede couch, leaf print armchair, and a swiveling flat screen television in the corner which suited both the bed and the couch nook.

The bathroom was another beast entirely. Cobbled stone floor was cool beneath your bare feet and the glass basin sink invited the guest to splash and luxuriate and rinse and repeat. The plumbing was strong as the toilets made an aggressive flush on each turn through but the real treat to this bathroom was the full standing shower. The shower was housed behind a frosted sliding glass door and extended from wall to wall. The bonus here was that there was not a tub but a flat floor which extended the whole of the stall. Not for the patron looking for a bath, however the shower had a block in the opposite corner of the removable shower arm. This block could have been for women shaving their legs, anyone sitting, catching a breath in the shower, or eco-conscious mates looking to save a step. Even the towels at the Savannah Inn deserve acclaim.

The soothing comforting tones and impression at The Savannah Inn was such that the transition from waking to sleeping was seamless. Sleep at the Savannah Inn was continued bliss. The King Sized bed was a true king and the new sheets, pillows, and comforter enveloped and held back the waking world.

Breakfast the next morning was continued joy. My wife and I were treated to piping hot coffee, fruit, sweet potato home fries, and frittata that was cooked personally by Innkeeper Gina. The home fries were diced into these very small pieces and the frittata was stuffed with mint, prosciutto, and basil.

I've gone on and on about the Savannah Inn Bed and Breakfast but to truly experience the inn you need to go and visit for yourself. Lewes Delaware has all the charms of a lovely seaside town and all the history one could ask for. Spend some time in Lewes at the Savannah Inn during the off-season and soak up the relaxed pace or come in the heat of summer and spend a free moment at Savannah Inn to escape the insanity of summer at a beach town. It's all up to you.
